Book Review: Historic Photos of New York State

Historic Photos of New York State

Historic Photos of New York State, by Richard Reisem

This book is filled with old trains, early automobiles, street urchins, luxury resorts, ships, natural landscapes, and architecture.

This isn’t a book of rare photos. Most of the pictures come from the Library of Congress, the New York State Archives, and the National Archives. It is, however, a very good selection of around 200 full-page photographs that take you back to crucial points in history.

The book features photos divided into four periods:

  • The Empire State (1850-1880)
  • Age of Extravagance (1881-1916)
  • Wine, Women, Want, and War (1917-1945)
  • A Changing World (1946-1967)

Every page has one large image and a paragraph that puts the photo into context. It gives just enough information to pique my curiosity. Every few pages, I find myself turning back to the computer to search for more information about New York tenements, waterways, and trolleys.

My goal is to tell an engaging story that spans more than 100 years of New York State history and help New Yorkers gain better insight into our great state, illuminating key events and the remarkable triumphs of the region’s historical figures. -Richard Reisem

This book is part of a series of historic photography books featuring many different cities and states.
