Civil War Video Lectures

The Condition in 1863 or The Broken Shackle

On Academic Earth, I have been working my way through a Yale history course called The Civil War and Reconstruction Era, 1845-1877. It is taught by Professor David W. Blight.

Academic Earth features free video courses from six different universities. So far, this is the only course on United States history, but they cover a variety of other topics as well.

The first several videos are shown below, but there are 27 lectures in the course. Enjoy.

Lecture 1 - Introductions: Why Does the Civil War Era Have a Hold on American Historical Imagination?

Lecture 2 - Southern Society: Slavery, King Cotton, and Antebellum America’s “Peculiar” Region

Lecture 3 - A Southern World View: the Old South and Proslavery Ideology
