New History Books - August 2009
The new books that are on my wishlist this month:
Time of the Rangers: Texas Rangers: From 1900 to the Present
By Mike Cox (BUY)
Last year, Cox published a well-praised history of the Rangers that went up to 1900. This would be a nice companion to that book.

The First Family: Terror, Extortion, Revenge, Murder, and the Birth of the American Mafia
By Mike Dash (BUY)
Just what it sounds like - a history of the origins of the Mafia in New York City.

The Passage to Cosmos: Alexander von Humboldt and the Shaping of America
By Laura Dassow Walls (BUY)
Alexander von Humboldt traveled to America in 1799. Now mostly forgotten, at the time he was an extremely famous intellectual who influenced a host of American thinkers.

King of Heists: The Sensational Bank Robbery of 1878 That Shocked America
By J. North Conway (BUY)
A story of an architect who led a double life in the 1870s, resulting in the robbery of the Manhattan Savings Institution for today’s equivalent of $50 million.
