Peleliu Island - Then and Now

Resting On Peleliu Island

This weekend on The Wired Jester, Alex Watson wrote about his recent visit to the small island of Peleliu in the Pacific Ocean. Peleliu was the location of a World War II battle between Japanese and American forces. It had the highest casualty rate of any battle in the Pacific War and popularized the phrase “thousand yard stare”.

The photos in the article show the modern remains of the battle. Rusty tanks and ruined building are scattered around the jungle.

Peleliu can be seen on the map below. Its name doesn’t show, but it is between Angaur and Koror and is the second island from the bottom of the frame.

The US Navy has an amphibious assault ship named after the battle of Peleliu.
